Silicone Bakeware as an Essential Kitchen Cooking Tool
By Cassandera
Even those with basic cooking experience know the range of problems that can be encountered in the kitchen. Traditional kitchen tools can warp, rust, break and even melt when accidentally subjected to high temperatures. But can this product offer a solution to all these problems? At first glance, silicone bakeware does not appear entirely practical. Granted, its whimsical design is able to attract attention by its bright colors and unique shapes. But on further examination it appears impractical to use, with the concept of flexible bakeware being almost impossible to grasp. But before you are too harsh to judge, take a look at how using silicone bakeware can simplify your kitchen and make cooking easier.
Advantages of Cooking with Silicone Bakeware
If you do any type of cooking, chances are you want kitchen tools that are easy to use, clean and maintain. Silicone bakeware comes in a variety of products ranging from cake pans, baking sets, baking cups, nonstick baking mats, molds, utensils and more. But what makes using this more practical than the average nonstick, stainless steel or other cookware product?
Like any baking product, they are heat resistant and able to withstand temperatures up to 500 degrees. Unlike metal and nonstick products, silicone bakeware cooks evenly. This eliminates burnt edges and the center cooks just as quickly as the rest of the item. So no more waiting for the center of your loaf or cake to cook while the outside edges look like they are being burnt to a crisp. Once the baked good is cooked and cooled, it can be removed from the silicone mold with a simple and gentle twist – and it will never stick to the cooking surface. Also, silicone mats can be used as a replacement for parchment paper. All you need to do is cut them to fit your existing pans if needed, and they can save you both time and money.
How to Use Silicone Bakeware
Using with this kitchen item can be extremely advantageous, but there are some points to keep in mind. Because of its nonstick nature, it does not need greasing or oiling before use. This means you can prepare low fat items even easier, and can make your meals healthier than using traditional bakeware sets. When you are cooking with silicone bakeware, make sure to support the mold by placing it on a pan before putting it in the oven because of its extreme flexibility. Never place items to be baked directly on the oven rack. Once the item is baked and cooled, it can be easily removed, and is ready for additional preparation – or to eat!
Silicone Utensils as a Kitchen Accessory
Chances are at some point, you have used (and melted) the rubber and plastic utensils in the kitchen. This may have occurred because the temperatures reached during the cooking process are extremely high, causing spatulas and spoons to melt while being used or if placed to close to the range top. Or they can become distorted while being cleaned in the dishwasher because they can bounce and hit the heating coils during the drying process. Silicone is extremely heat resistant, and silicone utensils maintain the same properties as any of the bakeware products. In other words, they resist melting even when exposed to high cooking temperatures, rangetop heat and dishwasher drying coils. So even after a year or several years of use, your silicone utensils will still look like new.
Cost of Silicone Bakeware
While using silicone cookware has a number of advantages, why should you replace your existing bakeware items? While it may not be practical to replace everything immediately, consider adding silicon bakeware to your kitchen gradually. After all, the concern that comes to mind when replacing any kitchen item is cost. Purchasing items online or while on sale is one option, but like traditional cooking products a silicone bakeware sets may be a more cost effective option.
Sets of silicone baking cups can start from $5, with the average range being around $10 for a set of 12. While this may not seem like a practical replacement for paper baking cups, if you make cupcakes frequently, this may be a functional and cost effective alternative that is also eco friendly. Individual silicone pieces start at approximately $10, but if you take time to look similar items are available in silicone bakeware sets for around the same price range. So you end up with durable kitchen cookware that looks like new even with frequent use.
Ready to Add Silicone Bakeware to the Kitchen?
At this point you are either ready to add silicone bakeware to your other cooking accessories, or you may still be a bit weary about the prospect. If you are still hesitant, start small and inexpensive by adding utensils or baking cups first. After you have tried them, chances are you will be impressed by how easy they are to use, clean and cook with - despite their unconventional appearance. All you need to do next is find the best silicone cookware for you and your kitchen!

Congrats on your nomination . This is an excellently written hub.I've seen these around, but I am afraid of the material used.
I have a jello mold that I swear by because everything comes out just perfect. Great hub. Congratulations on your nomination, too.
This is the first I've seen of this bakeware, but I asked my hubby about it and he said he's used it in culinary school and likes it a lot.
I was given a collapsible silicon bowl - which was great for camping it folds into itself and is unbreakable and takes very little space
these look great and seem really useful. I haven't tried any but they must be great for cupcakes.
Excellent information!
Very informative article. I used to operate a kitchen gadget kiosk and learned a lot from my customers. With families spread around these days a huge advantage is that travelling grandmothers can pack their bakeware!

I purchased a set of BakewaresBest molds on line. I love these things! It does take some adjusting to get the 'browning' desired, but now I've got the hang of it.
